Updates…Audiogazm will be MOVING to HitRevolution.com

Hey guys!!! I have big news!!!

Thank you ALL so much, those of you who tweeted and read the blog and sent me e-mails and all that.  Your support has been awesome (especially since I haven’t posted NEAR enough) and it’s kept me going strong. Because of YOU, Audiogazm has officially teamed up with an AMAZING new company called Project Revolution which is dedicated to connecting fans of independent  or self-released music with as many indie artists as possible. It’s an amazing new network….think of it as ReverbNation and Facebook’s love child, and a indie Billboard Top 40. The details are TOP SECRET until it launches. I can’t WAIT until it all gets going!!

They contacted me a few months back and asked if I would be one of the resident bloggers, and after a lot of thought I decided to take the job. Hailey Q’s Audiogazm will be the same blog you have told me you love so much, only i’ll be posting much more regularly.  Me and the Revo team will also be at a lot of live indie shows across the nation very soon,  so look for us and say hi :) The whole Project launches in January, but the websites will be up very very soon.  I’ll still be tweeting from the same twitter account, too. The only thing changing is my web address, people. YAY!

If you’re in an indie band or a self-released artist, e-mail me at haileyq@hitrevolution.com and talk to me about being one of our featured artists :) It’s all about real music, real fans, and real life. It’s gonna be HUGE and we would LOVE to include everyone!

See you at the new page ;)

Here’s My Heart In A Playlist, Darling…A playlist for the one who got away.

It happens to just about everyone. Someone totally amazing comes into your life and you blow it.  Shit happens that way. You pick up and move on…but a little piece of your heart will always be filled with how amazing that part of your life was. You’ve got to accept it’s over and remember the good times. Sometimes they’re the last thing on your mind, and then you hear a song that makes everything come flooding back–the good, the bad, and the messy. Yet you still love it. Here’s a chronological playlist of the one that got away from me, personally.  For those of you who have been fortunate enough NOT to have one of the most incredible people you’ve ever met get away, I commend you. You should still listen to this playlist though, just so you can kind of understand how it feels.

THE DOLLYROTS WANT *YOU*

The Dollyrots.

..to be a part of their FOURTH studio album!!!

I know we have some die-hard Dollyrots fans out there. There might be some of you who don’t even know who they are and just think they have a freaking awesome name. If you need a back story on them, go to my very first blog post and watch the only video I ever actually got around to doing for all the info you need. Listen to their music and fall in love with it. After you get all caught up, continue reading.

Ok, all caught up or already know it? Good. The Dollyrots are using an amazing online tool called Kickstarter.com, which basically lets fans give “donations” to bands in exchange for some really cool swag you can’t get anywhere else. They have a goal to reach: $7,500. I know it seems like a lot, but I know they can do this if all their fans help out! Everyone who donates $1 or more gets a free download, and if you donate $5 or more you get FOUR! Other awesome presents include signed copies of the album, digital downloads of the album, used guitar picks, personalized signed posters and t-shirts, homemade cookies from Kelly, Luis’s guitar (smashed in the HP commercial, rebuilt, and used in the “Because I’m Awesome” video), a phone call from all three Dollyrots, a day in the studio with them, and SO much more!!

Now i’m gonna get personal. I absolutely LOVE the Dollyrots. They’re the sweetest band you’ll ever get sweaty hugs from, and are willing to do anything for their fans. Their music has carried me through some of my toughest times, not just because they’re extremely talented and rock. It helped even more because they actually CARE. They care about the music, they care about the message of the music, and unlike a lot of bands I’ve met they actually care about US. The fans. The ones they do this for. They’re taking this leap at producing an album independently because THEY BELIEVE IN US! They know they have the greatest fans in the world (and if you’ve met any of us, you know they do), and they have faith that we will help them do this. They’ve done so much for us: meeting us at shows, giving out sweaty hugs like they were going out of style, making us bracelets out of their very own guitar strings, replying and retweeting on twitter, and just rocking out with their heart out.

So CALLING ALL DOLLYROTS FANS! Young, old, new, long-term. GO DONATE! They’re doing this for us, the fans! Help them reach their goal! Even if you can only spare a dollar, every little bit counts and I know they appreciate it. And if you can’t spare a dollar, please tweet this blog post, re-blog it, link it, e-mail it to your rich friend, anything!

Love,

Hailey

The 27 Club gets a new member–A tribute to Amy Winehouse and 27 Club.

We all know these people.  Most of us know a lot about their lives. Even more of us know about their deaths.

Kurt Cobain-suicide.

Janis Joplin-heroin overdose.

Jimi Hendrix-choked on vomit after he combined wine and sleeping pills.

Jim Morrison-”heart failure”; no autopsy.

John Lennon-murdered.

Brian Jones-drowned.

Now the 27 Club (Curse of 27, Forever 27 Club, etc) has a new member.

Amy Winehouse- unknown as of late.

To me, Amy Winehouse was more than just a black beehive-sporting coke addict who refused to go to “Rehab”. The jokes are endless, and I’m guilty of cracking a few myself. But Ms. Winehouse was a real person, a talented woman with a family and fans that cared about her. I always thought of her as the rock chick version of Norah Jones, with as much hurt in her voice as Janis Joplin and living proof that blues CAN be edgy as well as rebellious. How she died doesn’t matter, even though we’re all itching to find out.

The point is, the world lost another great talent. She will be missed, and her memory will live on through her music.  I’m no investigative journalist, I’m just a slave to music; hence this post not being more “How the hell did she die?” oriented.  Sorry about that. I’ll probably do another entry once an autopsy is done, but maybe not. The music she created when she was alive is what will stick around– not the trashy tabloid shit. So here is my “Forever 27″ list, a tribute to the life of Amy Winehouse and the other talents who died at this entirely too young age. All these songs are by or remind me a bit of Amy Winehouse, and are all by artists that died at 27. Should be listened to in order-ish.

Rock and Ricolas—a sick playlist

So,  I really wanted to get an interview up this week. One band has been giving me the runaround for for-ever, and one I have lined up as a sure thing I had to postpone because i’m so so sick! :( No voice, very little energy.  But I feel bad ’cause I never update this anymore it seems like and I keep getting asked about it. I’m sorry! A new interview will be up within the next few weeks, I swear! For now though, here’s a playlist that my sick ass keeps playing on repeat. It’s not well thought out or very planned, just a few songs I threw together in a haze of fever and codine-based cough syrup. Enjoy!

Hailey Q

13) Make Me Over- Lifehouse

Note: I currently have this on shuffle, and I don’t recommend playing it straight through, since it’s such a random list. But then, it might have the same effect as shuffle so what the hell! :)

Another Note: highly entertaining and philosophical if listened to with a high fever.

Updates: I’m back, the new bands i’ll be talking to soon, and the soundtrack to your life!!!

SO SORRY for being so distant/inactive with the blog! :( it’s been a crazy time over the past few weeks but i’m back!!!! I just felt like I should update Audiogazm readers on all the cool shit that will be going on with the blog in the next few months and what music i’ve been obsessing over recently.

One of the major bands I’ve fallen in love with is Lights Over Paris, or LOP for short. They won me over with the title track on their first album, “Turn Off The Lights” and kept me around with the lesser-known but equally sexy tracks like “Lime Light Girl” and “Medicine.” They JUST released a new single entitled “I’m Not A Gangsta” which has me fist pumping in my car on the freeway. Definitely check them out, or if you’re still skeptical keep watching this space because me and the lead singer Paul (aka TaLL University) have been talking about doing a video interview in the very near future! Teeny-bopper girls: be jealous.

I’ll also be talking to The Mulhollands too. They’re one of the BEST true indie bands I’ve ever run across.  Seriously.  Sara’s voice drips cool. The sound is unique and very rock and roll, with almost a synth-pop twist.  ”Halfway Home” and “Nights and Weekends” are my top two favorite tracks by them so far. I can’t wait to hear from them, and I can’t wait for all of YOU to hear them!

Lets see… as far as personally, I haven’t been up to a lot. Just moving, and family, and relaxing. Now my break is OVER, and I’m back to blogging!

Now, something I want all of YOU to do. Yes, YOU! You, looking at your computer or smartphone like a dumbass!! I want you to comment on this post, with the top five songs that would make up the playlist of your life! The essence of you, so to speak. Music IS a huge part of life for me, so I’m all the time trying to put together a playlist of my life. It changes from time to time, just like I do, but here are the top five tracks that have stuck on that list through (almost) everything!

THE SOUNDTRACK TO HAILEY Q’s LIFE

(Top 5)

1) Cherry Bomb-The Runaways

2)Body 21-Morningwood

3) Young Blood- Norah Jones

4)My Heart Explodes-The Dollyrots

5)Hot Mess-Cobra Starship

(A little mainstream, but come on. I’m doing this in a hurry, people! Cut me some slack!)

Anyway, thanks for being patient with me. I really appreciate it and I want to hear from everyone who reads this, whether you think i’m awesome or whether you think I suck. I love the feedback! Tweet me, e-mail me, comment, I read it all. Thanks guys!

That Stupid Bastard–a playlist to help you get over your ex.

It doesn’t matter how it ended. Whether they broke up with you after they insisted it was the real thing, or you came crawling back after a series of unfortunate events and they kicked you while you were down. It’s okay to mope, cry, and wallow in it for a while; but then you dust yourself back off and go in search of a new guy (or girl) to properly worship you the way you deserve. Just like this playlist does. It’s most effective played straight through, but it’s totally cool to shuffle too.

I made this specifically about someone I am trying to get over, and the music-even the wallowing tunes that remind me specifically of this person-helps. In short: David, this is for you.

Love,

Hailey Q

7) Forever & Always- Taylor Swift

8) One In A Million- Bosson

9) What The Hell- Avril Lavigne

10) Every Time You Lie- Demi Lovato

11) Kiss With A Fist- Florence + The Machine

12) Go Your Own Way- Fleetwood Mac

13) I Hate Myself for Loving You- Joan Jett and The Blackhearts

25) Seven Nation Army- The White Stripes

26) Grow a Pear-Ke$ha

27) Dance Floor- Apples In Stereo*

28) I Just Haven’t Met You Yet- Micheal Buble

*These songs don’t really have anything to do with crappy relationships, they are just thrown in there to perk you up :)

** I love The Runaways, but I seriously recommend the movie version of this song sang by Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. I love Dakotas voice. It’s a personal preference really, both are totally acceptable.

Happy 4/20, Stoners.

Heyyyy…

Okay, so I was reading all the 4/20 tweets and posts this morning and decided to make a playlist of all the best pot-related/drug-related songs I could think of. Now, lets just get this straight: drugs are bad, mkay? Songs about drugs, however, are usually the best :) So comment and list one of YOUR favorite stoner jams, or tell me how awesome (or horrible) you think my playist-making skills are. Happy listening!

**Disclaimer**

I am not promoting the use of illigal substances, bitches. Like I said, drugs are bad and all that.

Julean and the Rai: indie folk at its BEST!

Hey guys! So this week i’m obsessing over Julean and the Rai, the ever-changing band headed up by (coincidentally) Julean Rai. The sound varies from relaxing to heart-stopping, Julean has a voice that will really make you LISTEN, and if you give it a chance, I promise at least one of his songs will steal your heart :) Okay, I’ll quit being all emotional and sappy. The vlog and playlist will be up later tonight (or tomorrow morning?), but I got the pleasure of interviewing Julean via Skype this week and I couldn’t wait any longer to share it with you guys! *SPOILERS* turns out “95.676%” of his songs are about girls (think he should write one about me? lol!), he’s a former member of MENSA, and he’s got two new albums coming up! Wow! Check the link at the bottom to buy/listen to some of his stuff and let me know what you think! See ya next week!

**INTERVIEW WITH JULEAN RAI**

(Sorry that it’s so obnoxious to read, WordPress does NOT want to format this right tonight. I’ll try to get it fixed!)

Julean Rai: Hey Hailey --

 Hailey Q: Hey Julean!
Julean Rai: Hey there --
Hailey Q: It's great to finally catch you on! :) how are you?
Julean Rai: I'm doing well, how are you doing?
Julean Rai: I caught your blog -- you seem like a busy girl lol
Hailey Q: Pretty good! I try to keep pretty busy
Hailey Q: Ok so I noticed you're the only
regular member of Julean and the Rai. Are there any other
members that make regular appearances?
Julean Rai: The only regular member, yeah. Over
the years, the band part comes and goes. There was Lee
Dockery, Todd Jensen, and Sol between 1999-2001. Then
a few players in Tucson circa 2005-6, like Dave Mason and
-- then later, in New York it was Wayne Van Zee on drums,
Mikey on backup vocals and percussion (on the live album)
and also Lev Pelekh on bass (same album). Europe found
me doing pretty much mostly solo work.
Julean Rai: But for me, it seems keeping a band together has
always been about as easy as keeping a relationship together.
Except it's like having ... I dunno ... three to six girlfriends at
once; and then *they* all have to get along. These days I'd like
to work with an all-girl band, except for myself, because I figure
if it's gonna' be like that, then -- why not?
Hailey Q: haha, exactly! That makes sense.
Hailey Q: When I listen to your albums like "The Muse Tree"
and "Darlene" I get an indie/folk vibe...what genre do you
 personally identify your music with?
Julean Rai: That would be it. I dunno -- "Folk Rock" sounds
too light for my overall fare. Because I mean, when you get into
albums like "Alexandria", as well as the more recent upcoming
albums, they're probably more fusion, or indie, than folk --
respectively
Julean Rai: And most of the people I'm compared to a lot, like Ray
Lamontagne or M Ward, or Ryan Adams -- they're in the same
community genre. But I think the radio classifies us as "Adult
Alternative" hahaha
Hailey Q: I see. I love the sound, especially the strictly
instrumental "Alexandria, Falling". Did you compose all of those
yourself?
Julean Rai: I did.
Hailey Q: Nice!
Hailey Q: What inspired you to write them?
Julean Rai: Alexandria started out as an improvised
instrumental work I composed when I was doing some
odd left-hand / right-brain training in 1999. Musicially, it was
sort of a wake-up call at the time (did I just play that? kind
of thing). Lyrically, it kind of got inspired by
some deeper political / sociological beliefs I had at the
time that have evolved since; and also partly inspired by
the girl I was dating at the time who
had decided that she was getting off of her medication
and that nothing was wrong with her. We talked a lot
about the over-medication of society and the like, and
I guess it kind of went from there. I remember I actually
started writing it sitting there, with her, at the Perkins in Colorado.

Later, once the song evolved and became too long to play
at most shows (15 minutes on average), even though it was
kind of a listener favorite, I started thinking about splitting it up
into its major themes and making a concept album out of it; which is
what I did, more or less. It was all built off
of the main song (1:1 Alexandria, Falling) so when I play it live
today, it's a combination of that, the Theme, "Longest Arm",
"Man of Two Faces" and "Closing". I rarely play the other parts
live these days.
Julean Rai: A lot of "Alexandria" became more distinct when I
picked up more traditional Egyptian and Indian music and rhythms,
primarily supporting belly dancers in Tuscon around 2003-5, or so
Hailey Q: awesome! So is "Darlene" another album inspired by
a girl you dated?
Julean Rai: Ah; it is haha
Julean Rai: But in this case, it isn't about just one particular girl
Julean Rai: There's "Darlene" herself, mentioned in that work, as
well as in Like This and The Way That Leaving Goes on the Muse
album. There's another, nameless girl (that I call Guenivere in a
different album), mentioned in The Roots and Like This, as well as
in Here. Star is only in The Dance. The girl from Sin is unique -- that
songs about her, and Mountains of Anastasia is written *to* her ...
and then there's Laura, from Without the Kiss and A Wedding for
Laura, who I'm actually still friends with today --
Julean Rai: I think 95.676% of my music, in retrospect, is probably
about a girl,more or less.
Hailey Q: isn't most music? ;) lol
Julean Rai: Every artist needs his muse; I need several lol
Hailey Q: so are there any other bands/artists that influence you??
Julean Rai: I don't really keep a lot of heroes; I don't believe in them.
I feel as if we're all exactly the same, fundamentally, though. But a few
particular people have made it on that shortlist, if there is one, I think.
I really look up to Peter Gabriel, and he's not only a big influence
emotionally, as a writer, but also when I look to the future at what I
can become. He's alive, awake, aware, and himself. Publically full
of love, concern, heart and connection. And humor. The same
would be true for others on that list, like David Bowie, Taj Mahal,
Richie Havens, Tori Amos.
Julean Rai: But slightly more recent bands, like the Counting Crows
are a definite fave -- I think Adam and I have something in common
as writers. And Damien's "Blowers Daughter" blew me away when
I first heard it. And Norah Jones is definitely on that list, as well.
Hailey Q: I'm addicted to Norah Jones! You guys both made my
"Chill Out" playlist lol
Julean Rai: lol Yah; she's on mine, too --
Julean Rai: But I always hear people that inspire me, though I don't
know who they are. Or they aren't that famous yet. I credit most
of my playing style to a guy named Steve Maymo,
from Dayton back in 1996. And I picked up some playing cues from
Foscoe Jones and Shane Bartell, in Austin, as well years later.
Hailey Q: :) are you currently signed to any label?
Julean Rai: I am ... thinking of starting my own.
Julean Rai: i've had a few label offers, but I really feel like I'm
just too independent and spontaneous to go that route. I mean,
unless we're talking a real "indie label family" kind of thing. I haven't
had any offers from any of those at this time --
Julean Rai: For most of the last 10 years or so, I've been handling
publishing, tour management, merchandising, studio work and production,
rights management, radio play, band management; all by my lonesome.
haha But it kind of makes me think that with all of the great indie folk players
I encounter, I could easily find 2-3 for a short roster and start an indie
 label family of my own
Julean Rai: Oh, and one thing... The guys / girls that set this interview up --
I do have some support, but I just wouldn't call it a label. These are the
folks only recently that have kind of made it a point to get me to stop working
on my own, lol. If I didn't give them a mention, they'd kill me, haha
Hailey Q: that sounds awesome! there's a real shortage of indie labels nowadays.
Julean Rai: But that's [starting a label] not decided yet. I'm actually considering going
major label lately, as these are also the guys with the resources to really push
an album and an artist
Julean Rai: So I'm half-half right about now
Hailey Q: got it!
Hailey Q: ok, last question. Just for fun.
Julean Rai: sure :)
Hailey Q: Quick, five things you want Audiogazm readers to
know about Julean Rai!
Julean Rai: Oh, crap
Julean Rai: Hm. Okay, well -- let's see
Julean Rai: I like to travel, and I don't like to make plans or
 answer to anyone for it.
Possibly once or twice a year, I'll spend 11-15 weeks absolutely
minimized and living a "road trip" life. I don't how long that can last,
but -- it's highly addictive and exciting. I just can't do it as much anymore
because people recognize me in the strangest places.
